Solution brief OLA for Nutanix

Male working in data center

Key takeaways

  • The four-phase engagement includes tools like AWS Migration Evaluator. Insight architects deploy these tools to collect data.
  • Deliverables include a custom TCO and ROI analysis. The engagement ends with an interactive two-hour training session.
  • It optimizes workloads for Nutanix Cloud Clusters. Save on operational and licensing costs when migrating from to AWS®.

Service overview

The Optimization and Licensing Assessment (OLA) for Nutanix helps clients to save on licensing and operational costs when migrating virtualized workloads (VMware by Broadcom/Nutanix) to Nutanix Cloud Clusters on AWS (NC2 on AWS). It assesses the current on-premises and cloud environments based on running resources and provides recommendations to optimize instances and Nutanix licensing.

Scope of services

During the engagement, Insight architects will:

  • Deploy AWS Migration Evaluator in client on-premises data center.
  • Deploy Nutanix Collector to gather cluster statistics.
  • Review output from AWS Migration Evaluator, Cloudamize, and any other third-party tools Insight may adopt.
  • Export the data amassed by the Nutanix Collector to Nutanix Sizer for precise planning and recommendations.
  • OLA for NC2 on AWS includes:
    • Summary of all vendor contracts, ownership, and key dates
    • Summary report of optimized vendor licenses to AWS and advice for contract renewals and cost savings
    • Scope workloads to optimize
    • Collected utilization data of workloads using AWS Migration Evaluator and Nutanix Collector
    • Analysis and review of licensing data to model cost and optimization scenarios
    • Review of the assessment results and business case creation for license alignment

Services approach and methodology

This engagement will be conducted in four phases based on Insight’s standard project delivery methodology.

Phase 1

The purpose of this phase is to identify the project team members and facilitate a common understanding of the project objectives, roles, and responsibilities within the scope of the services covered by this offering.

Insight will conduct a kickoff meeting to:

  • Review and validate the project objectives and scope.
  • Discuss project activities and milestones.
  • Create a contact list of parties and members involved in the project.
  • Discuss remote connectivity requirements and needs.
  • Provide an agenda for the design session(s) and tentative schedule to allow stakeholders to schedule attendance.
  • Introduce, review, and establish the completion deadline for the Discovery Document. (The Discovery Document is the formal build specification and defines material components of the end-state environment.)
  • Confirm that client’s assigned Cloud Success Manager is authorized to act on their behalf and create build accounts used for deployment in phase 3.

Phase 2

Insight will use output from AWS Migration Evaluator, Nutanix Sizer, and, when necessary, third-party tools to collect licensing information and system utilization.

Discovery and planning tasks include:

  • Deploy AWS Migration Evaluator, Nutanix Collector, or third-party data collection tool into client on-premises environment.
  • Collect data from client sources such as license agreements/ contracts, purchase dates, etc.
  • Hold discussions with stakeholders.

100% fully funded by AWS.

Phase 3

Once data collection has completed, Insight will review for cost optimization opportunities.

  • Reduce CPU configurations
  • Leverage BYOL and reduce future licensing commitment
  • Identify overprovisioning
  • Outdated hardware requiring significant licensing cost
  • Best configuration for Nutanix licensing to run NC2 on AWS
  • Migration to AWS Cloud Native
  • Migration to Amazon Elastic VMware Service (EVS)
  • Migration to AWS Nutanix Cloud Clusters (NC2)

Phase 4 — Document transfer and closure

Insight architects will conduct a two-hour training session with the client and review the build-as document and the environment and discuss operational considerations. This is intended to be an interactive Q&A session and may be recorded.

Review the following:

  • Business case
  • Client goals
  • Recommended architecture/ optimized environment
  • Recommended migration pathway
  • ARR and TCO estimates
  • Contract renewal recommendations
  • VMware/Nutanix licensing summary and recommendations

The assigned Insight project coordinator will confirm:

  • Completion of project milestones
  • Receipt of deliverables

Deliverables

Insight will provide the following deliverables:

  • Build-as document
  • Current state vs. optimized state comparison
  • TCO/ROI analysis
  • Licensing optimization summary
  • Recommended migration pathways
  • Risk considerations
  • Architecture diagrams (if applicable)
  • Signed project completion form

The only deliverables of this engagement are specified above.

Location

All services will be performed remotely.
