Glossary What is a Managed Security Service Provider (MSSP)?

By   / 2 Jan 2023  / Topics: Cybersecurity

Managed Security Service Providers (MSSP) are outsourced vendors that take on the responsibility of managing and protecting a client’s IT ecosystem. An MSSP provides various services, including vulnerability management, detection and response, and application security, as well as mitigation, response and recovery support.

A comprehensive security service comprises various components that work together to provide a complete security solution. This can include:

  • Managed detection and response for 24/7 monitoring and defense against advanced cyber threats.
  • Managed vulnerability management, which allows organizations to improve their vulnerability management programs to protect network assets.
  • Managed application security, which provides access to, reporting on and improvement of application security.

Working with an MSSP allows organizations to shift internal resources to more business-critical tasks. Outsourcing security responsibilities also ensures an organization has the skillsets needed to keep its environment secure without going over budget. This is helpful for organizations that struggle to maintain the right level of security due to an MSSP’s ability to deliver a modern environment that maintains uptime and safeguards data from malicious activity.
