Ransomware and other email attack forms are on the rise — is your business protected? Mimecast® email security, available from Insight, provides world-class defense and ransomware protection that’s optimized for Microsoft 365.

The threatscape is evolving.

For their 2023 State of Email Security report, Mimecast surveyed 1,700 Chief Information Security Officers (CISOs) and other information technology professionals to understand the risks facing business today.

  • 59% say cyberattacks are growing increasingly sophisticated.
  • 2 out of 3 were harmed by a ransomware attack.
  • 97% have been targeted by email-based phishing attacks.
  • When asked what they expect their organization’s biggest challenge to be in 2023, 42% said weak email protections.

Email is the number one attack vector for a reason.

It provides cybercriminals more digital doors and windows to climb through.

  • 82% of companies report higher volumes of email
  • 74% are seeing more email-based threats
  • 76% are expecting to face serious consequences from an email-based attack.

The state of email security

While there are many types of email-borne cyberthreats, three remain the most prevalent:

1. Phishing: An attempt to acquire sensitive information through a fraudulent, malicious email

a. 59% of Mimecast survey respondents are experiencing more phishing attacks than in prior years.

2. Ransomware: A form of malicious software designed to encrypt files and render systems and data unusable until a ransom is paid

a. Among companies with 250 to 500 employees, seven out of 10 respondents acknowledged that a ransomware attack had damaged their business.

3. Spoofing: A technique used to trick the email recipient into thinking a message came from a trusted source

a. 91% of respondents were aware of attempts to misappropriate their email domain.

The collaboration dilemma

While collaboration tools are extremely beneficial, they might also facilitate additional risks for email security.

  • 72% of leaders think their organization will be damaged by a collaboration-tool-based attack.
  • 73% believe that the new threats posed by collaboration tools urgently needs to be addressed.
